Asea launches the CO₂ Performance Ladder in France with SKAO
Several years ago, SKAO, a Netherlands-based foundation committed to promoting climate-friendly procurement among organisations, launched the CO₂ Performance Ladder. This powerful decarbonisation tool helps companies and public bodies to achieve their goal of a climate-neutral business environment.
After 15 years of deployment of this tool in the Netherlands and Belgium, it is now coming to France! Asea has been selected exclusively by SKAO to coordinate its testing in France, from October 2023 to June 2025.
The CO₂ Performance Ladder is a revolutionary tool that enables clients to reduce their carbon emissions when procurement services and works.
It covers two mechanisms:
A robust, certifiable carbon management system for service providers.
Carbon ambition criteria linked to the subject of the contract to be included in consultations for purchasers.
The scheme makes it possible to use the framework of calls for tender to accelerate the decarbonisation of supply chains, while remaining a simple, easy-to-understand mechanism for both buyers and suppliers.
Two key figures demonstrate its effectiveness:
Over 70% VSEs and SMEs
More than 70% of the 1,200 organisations certified to the EPC (CO₂ Performance Ladder) in the Netherlands are very small businesses, demonstrating its accessibility.
Twice as fast
Studies show that this system stimulates the decarbonisation of service providers’ activities twice as fast as normal.
What sets the CO₂ Performance Ladder apart?
It is a simple, pragmatic and accessible system, and is particularly well-suited to public procurement because it relates to the subject of the contract. It ensures that service providers are committed to continuous improvement in terms of decarbonisation.
So it’s a practical measure that fits in perfectly with the recently published Green Industry Act (Loi Industrie Verte – France).
The SKAO Foundation (Foundation for Climate Friendly Purchasing and Enterprises) is piloting the European roll-out of the scheme: Ireland, Germany, the UK and Denmark are also getting in on the action!
